Google Business Profile optimisation checklist
A practical Google Business Profile checklist covering categories, business information, hours, services, photos, reviews and the website signals that support local visibility.
1. Get the core business information right
Core profile checks
Business name
Use the real-world business name consistently. Do not add services, towns or marketing phrases unless they are genuinely part of the business name.
Address or service area
Use a real eligible location when customers visit you, or configure service areas correctly for businesses that travel to customers.
Phone number
Use a working number that reaches the business and keep it consistent with the website.
Website
Link to the most relevant canonical website URL, usually the homepage or a genuine location page for multi-location businesses.
Hours
Keep regular, special and holiday hours accurate so customers are not sent to a closed business.
2. Choose categories based on what the business is
Google's guidance is explicit: categories should describe the business itself, not act as a list of keywords or every service offered. Choose the most specific legitimate primary category, then add only useful secondary categories that genuinely represent the business.
A category should complete the sentence 'This business IS a…'. Services belong in service fields and website content, not in a long list of loosely related categories.
Category choices can materially affect which local searches the profile is relevant for, so review them when the business model changes or Google introduces more precise options.
3. Complete services, attributes and business description
Add services that are genuinely offered and use clear customer language. Where attributes are available for the category, complete the ones that accurately describe accessibility, facilities, payment options or other useful facts.
The business description should explain what the company does, who it serves and what is distinctive without turning into a keyword list. Avoid unsupported superlatives, fake awards or city stuffing.
The same service terminology should also appear naturally on the website so Google and users see a consistent relationship between the Business Profile and the linked pages. For help connecting an eligible profile with useful website pages, our local SEO support covers business information, citations, reviews and local landing pages.
4. Add useful photos and videos
Media checklist
Logo and cover
Use clear, current brand assets that help customers recognise the business.
Exterior/location
For customer-facing premises, show what the location looks like so visitors can recognise it.
Team and work
Use real images of staff, products, completed work or services where appropriate.
Keep media current
Add new material over time rather than uploading one batch and never updating it.
Follow Google's quality guidance
Use well-lit, in-focus images without excessive filters or misleading alterations.
5. Build a review process without manipulating reviews
Ask genuine customers for honest feedback and make the request easy to complete. Do not offer incentives for positive reviews or create reviews from staff, family or fabricated accounts.
Respond professionally to both positive and negative reviews. Google notes that helpful responses show that a business values customer feedback, and active review management also gives prospective customers more context.
Do not obsess over inserting keywords into replies. Write for the customer and address the actual experience.
6. Make the website support the Business Profile
Website/local alignment
Consistent identity
Business name, phone, address or service area and core services should agree with the profile.
Strong local landing pages
Use genuine location pages only where there is distinct local relevance, proof or operational coverage.
LocalBusiness schema where appropriate
Structured data can reinforce visible business facts but should never invent offices, reviews or opening hours.
Fast mobile experience
Many local searches happen on mobile; calls, directions and enquiry actions should be easy to complete.
Clear conversion paths
Make the next action obvious: call, book, request a quote, visit or message.
7. Measure local performance properly
Track calls, website visits, direction requests and other available Business Profile interactions, then connect website sessions to enquiries or sales in analytics/CRM where possible.
Use Search Console and local landing-page data alongside profile performance. A business can gain more map visibility but still fail commercially if the landing page is weak or calls are not answered.
For multi-location businesses, measure by location rather than aggregating everything into one total.
Common Google Business Profile mistakes
Common problems include keyword stuffing the business name, using virtual offices or ineligible addresses, adding irrelevant categories, letting hours become outdated, creating duplicate profiles, buying reviews, leaving important profile fields blank and linking every location to the same generic page when better location-specific pages exist.
These shortcuts create policy risk and often make the profile less useful to customers. Accuracy and real-world representation should come before optimisation tactics.
Google Business Profile questions
How often should I update my Google Business Profile?
Update it whenever business facts change and review hours, services, photos and attributes regularly. Special/holiday hours should be maintained before customers encounter outdated information.
How many categories should I use?
Google recommends using as few categories as possible while accurately representing the core business. Choose the most specific relevant primary category and only genuine secondary categories.
Do reviews improve local rankings?
Google says review count and score can factor into local prominence, but reviews should be earned honestly. Helpful responses can also improve customer trust.
Can I add keywords to my business name?
Only if they are genuinely part of the real-world business name. Adding services or locations purely for ranking can violate Google's guidelines.
Can I pay Google for a better local organic ranking?
No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local organic ranking.
