Why AEO exists if Google says it is still SEO

The terminology exists because search behaviour has changed. A user may now receive a synthesised answer before deciding whether to click a website, or may ask a conversational system to compare suppliers, explain a concept or recommend an approach.

Google's 2026 generative AI guidance is clear that its AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. From Google's perspective, AEO and GEO do not replace SEO. That does not make the terms useless: they can still describe the operational work of improving how information is retrieved, represented and cited across answer-led experiences beyond a traditional list of blue links.

The safest strategy is therefore not to create a separate 'AI SEO' universe. Build strong SEO foundations, then make important information clearer, more evidenced and easier to corroborate across the web.

What AEO adds to a strong SEO programme

Useful AEO emphasis areas

01

Direct answers

Answer important questions clearly near the relevant heading, then provide enough supporting context for users who need depth.

02

Entity clarity

Make names, services, people, locations and relationships unambiguous across the website and reputable external profiles.

03

Evidence and corroboration

Use first-party data, named expertise, case studies, references and earned third-party mentions where they genuinely support a claim.

04

Question coverage

Understand the real follow-up questions buyers ask and answer them naturally within useful pages rather than spawning thin pages for every wording variation.

05

Machine-readable consistency

Use appropriate structured data where it matches visible content, but do not rely on markup as a substitute for quality.

06

AI visibility measurement

Track citations, brand mentions, referral traffic and the generative AI reports available in Search Console where relevant.

What does not change when you optimise for AEO

Pages still need to be crawlable and indexable. Weak information architecture is still weak. Duplicate content still wastes attention. Thin pages created only to match every possible prompt are still poor strategy. Users still need a fast, accessible and trustworthy experience.

Google specifically says you do not need special AI markup, tiny content 'chunks', an AI-only rewrite or an llms.txt file to appear in its generative Search features. Structured data remains useful where it describes visible content and supports existing rich-result features, but there is no magic AEO schema.

This matters commercially because it prevents businesses from buying novelty instead of fixing fundamentals. If a service page is not indexed, has no useful proof and cannot explain the offer clearly, an AI-specific tactic is not the first priority.

Can one page rank in SEO and appear in AI answers?

Yes. In most cases that is the goal. A useful page should satisfy the underlying user need regardless of whether the discovery path is a conventional result, an AI Overview, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity or another answer engine.

A commercial service page can target the buying decision while supporting guides answer deeper questions. Clear internal links connect the evidence and definitions back to the commercial page. This gives both users and retrieval systems a stronger understanding of the topic relationship.

Creating separate near-duplicate 'SEO' and 'AEO' versions of the same page usually creates unnecessary overlap. Split pages only when the intent genuinely differs.

How should AEO be measured?

Measurement layers

01

Search visibility

Keep tracking Search Console impressions, clicks and landing pages because Google generative features remain connected to Search.

02

Generative AI visibility

Use Search Console's dedicated generative AI reporting where available to understand visibility in Google AI experiences.

03

AI referrals

Track visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and other identifiable sources in analytics.

04

Brand citations and mentions

Monitor whether the business appears accurately for important prompt themes, while remembering AI answers can vary by context and user.

05

Commercial outcomes

Connect any additional visibility to qualified leads, sales or pipeline rather than treating mentions as the final objective.

When should a business prioritise AEO?

Prioritise the foundations first. If important pages are blocked, duplicated or poorly targeted, fix SEO. If the site already has useful, indexable pages but its expertise is difficult to extract or corroborate, AEO-oriented improvements become more valuable.

Businesses with complex services, specialist expertise, comparison-heavy sales journeys or high-consideration purchases can benefit from publishing clearer explanations, original evidence, named authorship and direct answers to buying questions.

The work should remain integrated with SEO, digital PR, content and analytics rather than becoming an isolated tactic.

AEO vs SEO questions

Will AEO replace SEO?

No. Google says SEO best practices remain foundational to its generative Search features and explicitly treats AEO/GEO as part of SEO for Google Search.

Do I need special AEO schema?

No special AI schema is required for Google generative Search. Use recognised structured data when it accurately reflects visible content and supports a legitimate search feature.

Is AEO just writing shorter answers?

No. A concise answer can help clarity, but the page still needs enough depth, evidence and context to satisfy the user's task. Google says there is no ideal content length for generative AI search.

Does llms.txt improve AEO on Google?

Google says it does not use llms.txt for Search and that the file neither helps nor harms Google visibility. Other systems may choose to use it separately.

Should SEO and AEO have separate agencies or retainers?

Usually they should be one coordinated search programme. The labels can help define emphasis, but the technical, content, authority and measurement foundations overlap heavily.
