How to get your business cited by ChatGPT and AI search

A practical guide to improving your chances of being discovered, understood and cited in ChatGPT and other AI search experiences without relying on unsupported AI-search hacks.

1. Make sure ChatGPT can access the pages you want surfaced

Technical access checks

01

Allow OAI-SearchBot

If you want content eligible for ChatGPT search summaries and citations, do not block OpenAI's search crawler in robots.txt.

02

Keep the page public

Important information should not require login, human verification or a client-only application state if you expect a crawler to retrieve it.

03

Check WAF and bot protection

A robots.txt Allow rule is not enough if Cloudflare, a CDN, CAPTCHA or firewall still returns 403 or challenges automated requests.

04

Use noindex deliberately

If a page is noindex, it should not be part of your search-visibility plan. OpenAI notes that crawlers need access in order to read page-level directives.

05

Return useful HTML/content

A successful HTTP response is not enough if the page only exposes a blank shell and important information never becomes accessible to retrieval systems.

2. Publish information that gives an AI system a reason to cite you

Commodity summaries are easy to replace. Strong citation candidates contain information that is specific, verifiable and useful: original data, first-hand experience, detailed product/service facts, named expertise, practical tools, case studies, methodology, pricing logic or clearly sourced analysis.

For an agency, that means going beyond pages that say 'we do SEO'. A page explaining how a real indexing issue was diagnosed, a benchmark built from first-party data, a transparent methodology or a useful calculator gives retrieval systems more distinctive material to work with.

Clarity also matters. Important facts should be written explicitly rather than hidden behind vague marketing language. State who the organisation is, what it does, who it serves and what evidence supports the claim.

3. Strengthen entity clarity across your site

Make the organisation easy to understand

01

Use a consistent business name

Keep the organisation name consistent across the website, profiles, directories and media references.

02

Name real people and expertise

Author pages and expert attribution give context to who is responsible for the information.

03

Define services precisely

Use clear service names and descriptions instead of relying on slogans that systems must infer.

04

Keep contact and location facts consistent

Where a business has genuine locations or service areas, keep those facts accurate across the web.

05

Connect related content

Internal links between services, guides, tools and case studies help establish topic and entity relationships.

4. Build corroboration outside your own website

A business describing itself as an expert is weaker evidence than independent sources also recognising that expertise. Relevant editorial coverage, industry associations, partner references, reviews, interviews, podcasts and useful citations can help create a more corroborated public footprint.

This is where digital PR and link building overlap with AI search. The objective is not to manufacture mentions across hundreds of low-quality sites. It is to earn credible references because the business supplied useful data, expertise, tools or commentary.

Google's own AI-search guidance similarly warns against pursuing inauthentic mentions. The principle is durable: external references should exist because another publisher had a real reason to mention the organisation.

5. Structure answers clearly without writing for robots

Use descriptive headings, answer important questions directly and then provide enough detail to support the answer. Tables, steps and FAQs can help where they improve human comprehension, but there is no need to reduce every paragraph to a machine-oriented 'chunk'.

A strong page may contain a concise answer, a detailed explanation, examples, evidence, caveats and related actions. That gives both a hurried reader and a retrieval system something useful to extract.

Avoid keyword stuffing or repeating the same answer in slightly different forms for every prompt variation. Build one authoritative resource for one clear intent, then link related intents to their own pages.

6. Measure ChatGPT visibility and referrals

Measurement approach

01

Track ChatGPT referrals

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, allowing visits to be identified in analytics.

02

Record cited pages

Note which pages are surfaced for commercially important prompt themes and whether the citation is accurate.

03

Check brand representation

A mention is not necessarily useful if the business is described inaccurately or for the wrong service.

04

Track conversions

Measure whether AI-search visits contribute to qualified enquiries, calls, purchases or assisted conversions.

05

Repeat tests carefully

AI answers can vary by user, context and time, so avoid treating one prompt screenshot as a fixed ranking position.

What not to do for ChatGPT citations

Do not buy bulk 'AI mentions', create fake reviews, stuff pages with prompt phrases or publish dozens of near-identical pages only to cover every conversational wording. Those tactics create weak information and can also collide with normal search spam policies.

Do not treat llms.txt, schema or crawler access as a citation guarantee. They can be parts of a technical policy, but relevance and source quality still determine whether information is useful enough to retrieve.

And do not invent statistics, client outcomes or credentials simply because AI systems prefer specific facts. False precision damages users and creates a public record that can spread across systems.

ChatGPT citation questions

Can I submit my website directly to ChatGPT search?

OpenAI's current publisher guidance focuses on public accessibility and OAI-SearchBot access rather than a guaranteed submission queue for ordinary web pages.

Does OAI-SearchBot access guarantee a citation?

No. It makes content eligible for discovery by ChatGPT search but does not guarantee that a page will be retrieved, ranked or cited for a particular prompt.

Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?

Do not assume a one-to-one relationship. Strong SEO foundations help make content accessible and authoritative, but different AI search systems can use different retrieval sources and ranking processes.

Should I allow GPTBot as well?

GPTBot is a separate crawler associated with potential model training. Search visibility and training preferences should be treated as separate policy decisions.

How can I tell if ChatGPT sends traffic?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral links include utm_source=chatgpt.com, so you can identify that traffic in analytics and connect it to conversions.
